The following error message
"Could not open the document because a JPEG marker segment length is too
short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)"
has been known to appear in Adobe Photoshop when trying to open an image file from a
Coolpix camera.
Solutions
1 The camera has been turned off after the images have appeared on the desktop in
the camera icon, but have not been yet been downloaded.
If you turn the camera off at this stage, an error like that shown above may be displayed.
Leave the camera on while opening and saving images
2. Upgrade to a more recent version of Nikon View.
If you are using Nikon View Ver.2.1 or earlier, you can download the upgrade to version
2.5.2 (note that the version available on our site is an updater, and can only be used if
you have already installed Nikon View on your computer).
3. The problem can be due to a loss of data in the Windows serial communications
system, and occurs when the camera is sending data faster than the computer' serial port
can receive it.
To avoid this problem, please reduce the speed of the serial interface in Nikon View,
or turn off the FIFO buffers (Windows Computers) s the port which is being used to connect
to the camera.
The FIFO buffer switch can be found from the System icon in the
control panels. Select the Device Manager tab, then select the Com port
which is being used for camera connection and click Properties.

Then click Advanced.....

And uncheck the setting "Use FIFO buffers".

4. On MacOS computers the database which identifies the file type may be
corrupted. To fix this, rebuild the desktop (start the Macintosh with the command and
option keys held down).
5. It has been confirmed that Nikon View does not function as expected on computers in
the Power Mac 6200 and 6300 series or on Performa computers (computers in the Performa
54xx and 64xx series excepted).
If you are using one of these computers, we recommend that you use a card reader to view
the contents of the memory card.
6. If problems still persist, please check that the original file on the Compact Flash
card may be opened in Photoshop, by copying it to your computer using a Compact Flash card
reader. This error message occasionally occurs as a result of a data error in between the
camera and CF card, and in this case, the file on the card will unfortunately be
corrupted, and the CF card should be re-formatted before further use.
