4. Avoiding Error 03000554 or 03000555

The above error code is a general indication of there being something missing in between the scanner software and the scanner itself. A useful set of tips that may help you to remove this error message is listed below:

  • Make sure that the SCSI card is installed correctly. This can checked by accessing the device manager from My Computer|Control Panels|System. Your SCSI card should be shown and checking its properties should report that it is working correctly. If you are experiencing problems, download the Nikon Fast Track Scanners guide from the manuals page of the Download section.
  • Make sure that your scanner has a unique SCSI ID number. This is set from a rotary or push switch on the rear panel. Avoid using zero and seven as these are often taken up by the SCSI adapter and any SCSI hard disk on the system. After changing a SCSI ID, the power must be switched off and on again.
  • Make sure that the scanner did not have a slide inserted when the unit was powered on.
  • When using a clean Windows NT system, the ASPI 32 bit layer must be installed. This can be achieved by installing the EZ SCSI lite program of SCSI utilities from Adaptec. (www.adaptec.com)
  • Check that both ends of the SCSI chain are terminated. Termination means that the ends of the electrical connections at the first and last devices are dampened by resistors. A terminator may look like a plug with no wires for fitting to the spare connector of the scanner, or may be a set of multilegged components that fit onto the SCSI card. If your SCSI card does not have these components fitted, you might find that the termination is set by a choice in a menu at start up ( The start up menu can usually be found on Adaptec cards by holding down the Ctrl key and "A" during boot up) . In all cases, both ends of the SCSI chain must be correctly terminated. If you unsure about termination, check your documentation, seek help from your system supplier or visit www.adaptec.com/cables.
