5. Focus Modes - Autofocus Area Mode - Auto Selection by Closest Object

focus_screen.GIF (2070 bytes)
The Viewfinder of the Coolpix 990 showing the five Autofocus areas.
The Coolpix 990 has a sophisticated Autofocus system which can be set to focus on an object located in any one of five areas in the viewfinder. The selection of target area is actioned by a thumb selector pad on the rear of the camera.
As well as this manual mode of selecting the target area, the camera has an automatic method, based on an ability to check each of the five target areas and then select the one in which the object closest to the camera lies.
Focus_bg1.JPG (22141 bytes) All five areas are similar distances from the camera. The background is in focus.
focus_fg1.JPG (20167 bytes) Moving the camera to the right brings the focus area over the cellphone. This object is nearer than the objects in the other four areas and automatically becomes the AF target.
