2. Examining picture shooting data in the info.txt file

Most Nikon digital cameras record shooting information such as date, time and camera settings into each image file. This information can be revealed in the supplied browser application Nikon View, but cannot be seen once the file is renamed or edited in another imaging application.

To make this information more permanently available, the Coolpix 990 camera also copies this information into a file called info.txt which is located in the folder on the CF card where the images are stored.

This file can only be seen when the CF card is connected to the computer by a CF card reader or a PCMCIA slot in a laptop so that it appears as a hard disk on the desktop of the computer.
The info.txt file does not appear when the CF card is being browsed in the camera using Nikon View.

An info.txt file opened in the Windows Notepad application. Note that each folder on the camera will contain a unique info.txt file which holds the shooting data from the images within that particular folder.

MacOS User Note:

The info.txt file is not visible when the camera is connected by USB cable. It is only visible when the CF card is accessed by a CF card reader and the Nikon View Control panel item "Mount Camera PC-Cards using Nikon View is NOT checked.

In Europe, Coolpix cameras are supplied with Fotostation software. This software copies the shooting information into a reserved data field so that it can be seen under the "Image Properties" tab by clicking the small camera icon.
