When using the M-Rec setting for taking pictures,
the Coolpix 900/E950/E-700/E-800 allows the Brightness and Contrast of the recorded image
to be adjusted. This type of control is unique to digital cameras and acts differently
from exposure (EV) compensation.
Exposure compensation increases or decreases the amount of light entering the camera.
This means that increasing exposure compensation can bring our detail in the shadow areas
but carries the risk of causing the highlights to burn out.
The Brightness control can lift or drop the entire image tone range without
altering the overall contrast. This can be useful when shadow detail must be lifted, but
highlights must be preserved.
The Contrast control can be used to increase mid-tone detail without compromising
highlights or to flatten the image without losing shadow detail.
These two extra in-camera controls have been included to make the Coolpix cameras
versatile, professional quality systems that is able to manage the widest possible
range of lighting conditions.
