10. Connecting the Camera to Your Computer with Nikon View

The E-900/700/800 and 950 cameras may be connected to the Serial Ports of MacOs or Windows Computers via the supplied cables.
The E-990 is also able to support connection by USB (Universal Serial Bus).

view.gif (456 bytes) When Nikon View is installed successfully, the camera appears as a hard disk drive called "Nikon View" on your desktop  (MacOS) or under "My Computer" (Windows).
view2.gif (1249 bytes) On a Windows PC, opening this drive will reveal three icons: the Camera, a CF card (if your computer is fitted with a CD Card reader or PCMCIA slot) and a hard disk folder.  On a MacOS computer the icon opens directly into the camera.

The image files on the CF card in the camera are contined within the camera icon, inside folders that you or the camera has created. To access the files, drag and drop them to the desktop, to other folders or into imaging applications.

You cannot drag files into the camera drive icon.

Alternative Connections
The Coolpix cameras cannot be connected using SCSI or parallel ports.
As an alternative, the camera's Compact Flash memory card may be inserted in a PCMCIA card slot (as found on most laptop computers), by using an adaptor : the computer should then show the Compact Flash card as an additional disk drive depending on computer's operating system software. see Downloading by Compact Flash or Serial Link.

Software Updates
Please note that the Nikon View software updates supplied from this web site are not full versions: they are u[dates which require a previous installation of Nikon View. If you have lost or destroyed the software that came with your camera and need a new complete version on CD ROM, please contact your National Nikon representative (see the directory)

Solutions

1. Adjust the port speed rate.
If you are using Nikon View 900, click OK to close the error message window.
Select Settings  from the View menu and lower the Port Speed setting from 115200 to 19200.
If you are using Nikon View Ver. 2 or 3, click OK to close the error message window.
As you will not be able to open the settings dialog when the "100Nikon" or "IM01E900" window is open, click the Back button in the Nikon View window toolbar.
With the "Digital Camera", "Removable Media", and "Hard Disk" icons displayed, select Settings from the View menu and lower the Port Speed setting from 115200 to 19200.
2. Uninstall and then re-install Nikon View.
To uninstall Nikon View, select Add/Remove Programs from the Start menu > Settings > Control Panel.
Select Nikon View900 or Nikon View2 from the list of applications displayed and click the Remove button.
3. From the Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel, open the System panel, select the Device Manager tab, and double-click "Ports (COM & LPT)." If a "!", "?", or "x" is displayed next to "Communications Port, " select the affected port and click the Remove button, then restart your PC and check the status of the port again.
4. Uninstall and then re-install Nikon View.
To uninstall Nikon View, select Add/Remove Programs from the Start menu > Settings > Control Panel.
Select Nikon View900 or Nikon View2 from the list of applications displayed and click the Remove button.
5. If your PC has two serial ports, try connecting the camera to the other of the two ports.
6. If your PC is equipped with an internal modem, try disabling it temporarily.
From the Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel and open the System control panel.
Open the Device Manager tab and double click "Modem." Select the internal modem, click the Properties button, and select "Disable in this hardware profile."
7. If you are using a laptop computer with an IR port, try disabling the port temporarily.
Select the IR port in the Device Manager, click the Properties button, and select "Disable in this hardware profile."
8. If your computer has an internal modem, it is possible that the serial port was disabled at shipment.
Make sure that the serial port is enabled.
Consult the documentation provided with your computer for information on connecting serial or RS-232C devices, or contact your computer's manufacturer.
9 Turn off any installed Anti-Virus software (reason: Anti-Virus software thinks that the Camera is a hard disk and tries to scan it.),
10 Windows NT 4 users should make sure that the correct serial port is enabled. This can be checked under the Windows NT 4 Control Panel. Note that Windows NT4 does not support PCMCIA hot-swop : you will have to restart your computer to gain access to a CF card in the PCMCIA slot
11 Mac OS users: Disable Apple Talk on the Serial Port that you are using.(reason: Apple Talk blocks connection to the camera.)
12 Devices which make use of the serial port such as Wacom™ graphics tables and Palm Organisers™ may also block communication resulting in an error message stating that the camera cannot be connected.
13 It has been confirmed that Nikon View does not function as expected on computers in the Power Mac 6200 and 6300 series or on Performa computers (computers in the Performa 54xx and 64xx series excepted).
If you are using one of these computers, we recommend that you use a card reader to view the contents of the memory card.
14 If you are using Mac OS 8.1 or earlier with a computer in the Power Mac 4400, 6500, 7220, G3, Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh, PowerBook 2400, older (beige) G3, or new (Blue & White) G3 series, you will require the extension SerialDMA (Ver. 2.1).
You can check for this extension by opening the Extensions Manager from the Apple menu > Control Panels.
If you are using Nikon View Ver.2.0 or 2.1, you can download SerialDMA (Ver. 2.1) from the Apple web-site.
If you have Nikon View Ver.2.5, you can use the SerialDMA Update in the Utility folder on the Nikon Scan Ver. 2.5 CD
15 If you are using a PowerBook with System 7.6.1, you will require Nikon View Ver.2.1.
If you are using version 2.0, download Nikon View Ver.2.1 from the download service on our web-site.
Nikon View Ver.2.0 must be installed on your computer before you can upgrade to version 2.1 (Mac OS 8.1 or later is required for a serial connection with Nikon View Ver.2.5 or later).
