The Nikon D-1 camera can produce files in a number of different image file formats.
Some of the formats require Nikon software in order to open them and view the image. The
table below explains the differences in the file formats and the software required to
access or acquire them.

Requires Nikon Capture software to convert
to RGB |
*1) Nikon View software is supplied with a Nikon Photoshop plugin which is
installed in the Plugins folder. The YCbCr files can then be opened by selecting this as
file format in the Photoshop File:Open menu. YCbCr files give an identical
image to RGB files, but are 66% of the size. Nikon YCbCr files cannot be
opened by Photoshop LE versions (Message: "Could not complete your request because
the TIFF files uses an unsupported colour space."). Fotoware 4.0 can open Nikon YCbCr
TIFF files, if the plugin is copied to the Fotoware "Extensions" folder.
*2) RGB and YCbCr files can be preset to Black and White only. The processing of a
Black and White image gives more information to the Luminance channel and produces a
higher quality result than converting to Black and White from RGB.
*3) The quality of an RGB file produced by Nikon Capture from a RAW file will be
superior to the same RGB file produced directly in the camera as the processing power of
the host computer in which Nikon Capture is running permits a more accurate conversion
from the RAW file. Nikon Capture is recommended for studio quality work. The in-camera
RAW-RGB converter is optimized for speed. The Nikon Capture RAW-RGB acquire process is
designed for high quality output.
