12 Is the D-1 (and other cameras) compatible with the IBM Microdrive™? (updated 27th June 2001)

About Nikon Cameras.

The Compact Flash card slot in the D-1 camera will accept both Type I and Type II CF cards. Type II cards are slightly thicker than Type I and will NOT fit into any of the current Coolpix range including the E-990 except the Coolpix 995. However, operation with this camera is not guaranteed by Nikon and performance including speed of of start up, saving files and battery life will be lower than when using Solid State Media CF memory cards.

About the Microdrive ™

The IBM Microdrive™ is an electro-mechanical device based on a rotating magnetic disk, just like a computer hard drive.

This type of device has a high capacity compared to current solid state memory cards, and is attractively priced. However, it has a much higher power consumption than a normal CF card and the battery life of the camera will be reduced as a result of using one of these cards in a D-1.

IBM 340 Mbyte Microdrive product is considered in general to be not  fully compliant with any D-1 range cameras including the D1x and D-1h.

The 1Gbyte and 500MByte product is compatible with D-1x and D-1h cameras.

This information is not an official technical compatibility statement regarding this type of card and Nikon cameras.
